It would seem that the further I get into my third trimester, the more forgetful I become. Today is Saturday, and I can’t recall much of what has happened this week. Sometimes it really feels like I am living day-to-day, with no recollection of the previous day. We’ll see if my memory ever comes back after this baby is born.
OH! Random memory from this week! It was yesterday, actually… For Integrated Science, we went to the cadaver lab on Friday. Cadaver is another way to say corpse specimen. The formaldehyde was too strong for me, and I couldn’t stand the smell. I felt sick pretty quick, and had to leave after only being in the lab for less than five minutes. Let me be honest–it was educational to see the inside of an actual human body, but I just couldn’t survive the smell.
As far as the learning for this week, I enjoyed it for the most part. You see, this lesson was on helping those with special needs who are not disabled. “Gifted” is one of those needs, and I was in the gifted program for most of middle school, and all through high school. I have to say, many of my teachers tried to excel our learning, but I never felt like it was very productive. I did enjoy going to a gifted program one day out of every week, however! It was so different from everyday school learning!
Every semester, we took two classes–one in the morning and one in the afternoon–and most of the time, they were creative and invigorating. Not all of them really helped us excel academically, but they weren’t not helping us learn!
One semester, I was part of a group that wrote, composed, and performed a musical–all in one semester! It was hard! We also designed the whole set and worked backstage. That was something to remember! Another semester, in another class, we studied ancient civilizations and had to figure out clues to discover things about our assigned ancient civilization. We also had to create “artifacts” that we could show off at our “museum tour” that we put together for the fifth graders of different schools in our district that came. I sometimes think I learned more practical skills from that program than I learned from every day school. Being gone from class one day a week helped me develop skills to stay on top of work even when I missed class.
In the end, the lesson this week brought back a lot of memories about being a gifted child who would’ve otherwise been incredibly bored with the work at school.
