I’ll be honest, I don’t believe my SPED exam was an accurate representation of everything I’ve learned this semester, but I did appreciate how it was a bunch of case studies. That was great.
I’ve been working so hard to get everything done this week that’s needed to be done. I dropped the ball last weekend because my husband and I moved apartments. Today, we spent 5 and a half hours cleaning our old place. I am tired! I feel sick all the time again, too. Haha. Delivery is near. Well, 6 weeks away, anyhow.
Let’s start by talking about the Orthopedic Disability simulation. I did that on Tuesday. It was relatively easy to rent a wheelchair from the office on the 3rd floor of the Hinckley. That was a blessing! It definitely was a challenge to use the restroom in a wheelchair when I couldn’t use my legs… AND I was seven and a half months pregnant, to boot! I ran into one of my friends from a while back ago, and she seriously thought I had been assigned to a wheelchair for medical reasons (pregnancy). After all, the last time she’d seen me, I had told her I was struggling to get around and my back was hurting. Many people offered to help me up the hill, but I told them, “Nah, I’ve got it this time.” It worked out. By the time I put the wheelchair away, my shoulder was popping something awful, and my hands felt a little raw, but navigation was pretty good. Except for trying to get over that lip on the entryway to the bathroom on the first floor of the Hinckley building. That bathroom is impassable. I had to have at least one person help me each time (in and out)!
Next, let’s discuss the simulation activity that has me unable to use words with the letters “l” or “n”. This was the one I wasn’t sure how it would go. I went to the store today, and sincerely needed help locating two items–a pumice stone for cleaning, and magic erasers. I first asked about magic erasers (they were at the top of my list, and I completely forgot that I also needed pumice stones. Haha… pregnancy..). I found an employee at Broulim’s and said, “I have…. ask…. do you have magic erasers?” He watched me trip over my words, but led me straight to them. That was that. But then I remembered that I needed pumice stone too! Not wanting to have to go through all that again, I searched for it on my own, but couldn’t find it anywhere! I approached a different employee and asked, “Do you have pumice?” I couldn’t say “stone,” and he didn’t understand what pumice was. THAT was going to be interesting. So, he called over a different employee to take me to find this other product that I had no idea what it was! I just knew that he wasn’t about to lead me to pumice stones. When we got to the cleaning isle, he pointed out what he thought I was looking for, and I had to clarify that I needed something “hard, rock.” He got the message, and then I had 3 employees, all searching for the elusive pumice stone! Then, we found it! It was very hidden. It was quite the adventure.
